The average colon contains the waste of approximately 8-15 meals plus the old matter that over time has been pressed up into the folds of the colon, coating the walls. This is basically how the colon becomes a stagnant holding pool for putrefying and fermenting waste. This mainly occurs from eating large portions of food (not stopping when you are comfortably full), lack of fibre, not enough water intake, high coffee, soft drink or alcohol intake, lack of movement (exercise), poor diet and/or high stress.
